Skin Protection

slickrock-hiker-east-side-16.jpgSun Protection: Four out of five brand-name sunscreens either provide inadequate sun protection or contain chemicals that may be unsafe.

In a study of more than 900 brand-named sunscreens, 7% of the products with SPF ratings of 30 or higher did not protect against UVA rays. Only 15% of the sunscreens met the group's criteria for safety and effectiveness by providing broad-spectrum sun protection, remaining stable in sunlight, and containing only active ingredients considered safe.

Products containing the sun-stable and UVA filtering ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide were more likely to score highly in the group's analysis.

Mosquito Repellent: DEET is used in more than 230 products despite it being a registered pesticide. It is an organic solvent used in rubber and plastic cements and paint removers.

DEET is absorbed through the skin and passes into the blood. Studies have shown that DEET causes brain cell death and behavioral changes in rats. The exposure to DEET causes neurons to die in regions of the brain that control muscle movement, learning, memory, and concentration. (Duke University Medical Center).

Botanical repellents are effective and non-toxic. They need to be applied more frequently than DEET based repellents, but they do not carry the same health risks. Our Mosquito Repellent is made from the pure essential oils of eucalyptus, cedarwood, bergamot, clove, citronella, lemongrass, & rosemary, combined in a synergistic formula that insects simply hate!
